Mira Sanu became the 2nd athlete to win a medal at the Olympics after Karnam Malleswari in the women’s weightlifting category in India. Mirabai Sanu lifted 84 kg in his first attempt and 87 kg in his second attempt. However, Mirabai Sanu failed to lift 89 kg in the 3rd attempt.

Who is this Mirabai Sanu?

Mirabai Sanu was born on August 8, 1994 in Nanbag Coxing near Imphal, Manipur. The family recognized Sanu’s strength at the age of 12 as he carried heavy logs. After training as a weightlifter, Mirabai Sanu was selected from Manipur.

Mirabai Sanu’s first international debut was at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Mirabai Sanu, who competed in the competition at the age of 18, won a silver medal in the 48 kg weight category.

Then in 2016, at the age of 20, Mirabai Chanu competed in the Olympics for the first time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sanu, who competed in the 48 kg weight category, finished 6th.

Sanu, however, did not give up, and next year the World Weightlifting Championships took place in Anaheim, USA. Sanu, who competed in the 48 weight category, excelled in the snatch and clean jerk category and won the gold medal.

Mirabai Sanu also made her mark at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. In the 48 kg weight category, Sanu won the gold medal in the clean jerk and snatch categories.

Chanu competed in the 2019 Asian Champions Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo, China. Sanu, who dominated the 48 kg weight category, won the gold medal in the snatch and clean jerk category.

However, Sanu, who competed in the 49 kg weightlifting championships in Pattaya, Thailand in the same year, finished 4th.

Sanu competed in the 49 kg weight category at the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last year. Former Asian champion Sanu was able to finish 3rd. However, Sanu won the gold medal at the National Championship Weightlifting Championships in Kolkata last year.

In recognition of Mirabai Sanu’s achievement, the Central Government presented him with the prestigious Kale Ratna Award and the Padmasree Award in 2018.
